Marine Conservation

Conservation Status

Richard Newell Associates are able to advise clients on the conservation status of habitats in the vicinity of proposed infrastructure developments and to assist in development of the project to minimise any impacts on resources of potential conservation significance.

We have extensive experience of marine surveys in the coastal waters of the UK as well as overseas in Malaysia and Australia. We have also in recent years been involved in advice on the economic implications of designation of conservation areas in the estuaries and coastal waters of the UK.

Special Areas of Conservation

In recent years there has been an increasing focus on the need to set aside specific marine conservation areas. Marine Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are currently being designated as a result identification of the conservation status of habitats in UK coastal waters.

Designation requires an extensive knowledge of the nature and distribution of habitats and of the species that characterise them as well as an assessment of the economic implications of designation.
